Nowadays GPS (Global Positioning System) is a well known fact that has already become a norm of life for a great number of people. Global Positioning System was worked out and realized by the United States Department of Defense.

The sending satellite spreads radio signal to a GPS antenna and the delay time is counted to define the distance between the receiver and transmitter. It means that to detect 3-D coordinates GPS receiver must identify the distance to three transmitters and the time of the GPS system. And when we want to define coordinates and altitude of a receiver we are to use minimum 4 signals from 4 satellites. Orbital force supervision is implemented from the main control station that is situated in Schriever base, Colorado.

A great amount of usual persons as well as the police, sailors and rescuers use Global Positioning System for different needs, mostly for navigation, position and speed definition. If you need GPS devices you may get it almost everywhere nowadays. It is also built in the most computers, mobile telephones and onboarders. GPS receiver gives you a possibility to define geographical coordinates of the receiver's location at the present moment of time. The exactness of the position detection is from three to five meters and when radio signal is corrected from Earth it becomes higher and may be to one millimeter.

There are 2 kinds of maps. Raster maps are related to the first kind of maps that are the simplest and the most available. But vector maps have their proper data system within them. They have all useful data about objects, their characteristics and location. For example the area information includes the rivers, lakes, hills and other objects that are located in this territory. These 2 types of maps contain the information about all the hotels, motels, restaurants and service stations in your place of location. So you can buy also portable GPS that will give you a convenience during the travel.

There are also some drawbacks that Global Positioning System has. The basic shortcoming is that GPS is radio-navigation equipment and due to it radio signal may not be received in some conditions. So if you are located in a reinforced concrete construction it is almost impossible to identify your location. But anyway it is the best system of defining your geographical coordinates for today.
